Melrose Ambulance Station Team

East Region

Our quiet space, the story so far...

After a challenging two years working through the Covid pandemic, the staff morale within Melrose Ambulance Station in late 2021/early 2022 was particularly low; we were both physically and emotionally drained. This was also evident in our iMatter 2021 report results with the team members feeling that their health and wellbeing was not sufficiently cared for and they did not have sufficient resources and support to do their job well. Additionally, with increased staff resourcing, the space at Melrose station became limited.

Through team discussions, it was felt that a quiet safe space within the station would be beneficial to improve staff experience and wellbeing. With the support from our Area Service Manager and the Head of Service, it was agreed it may be more practical having an outside space rather than trying to section a room within the station. An action plan was formulated when a colleague mentioned he was wanting rid of his shed and the project of upcycling then began.

In Spring 2022, 5 members of staff volunteered to dismantle and reassemble the shed at Melrose and a local removal company assisted us with the transfer of the shed.  During this process letters were written to local companies with details of the project and asked for any possible donations.  To date we have had felt for the roof, a new window, timber, under floor heating and paint donated.  This is very much a work in progress, were awaiting the instalment of electricity, and hopefully more donations to make it a relaxing, quiet space.

We are hoping to have the space ready to use before the end of the year, fully equipped with two recliners, blue tooth speaker, massagers and some books.

There can be many reasons for staff needing to have some time and space to reflect, recoup and unwind, be it emotional pressure following a difficult job or physical demands. We hope by this project which is by staff for staff will be a small step in restoring morale at Melrose.

Colleagues contributing to this project include all various job roles at the station, both team members and managers. We all feel empowered being involved in this project as it is going to directly benefit our welfare and we are grateful for the kindness and generosity shown by local businesses in support of the project.
