Going the Extra Mile
The story below was written by the Senior Charge Nurse from Ward 7
The team in ward 7 at UHW transformed from a medical respiratory ward to a COVID 19 ward providing CPAP (Continuous positive airway pressure therapy).
As a team we were trained on CPAP and caring for critically ill patients – this was done swiftly and safely. All the while the staff knowing they were at greater risk due to the AGP they were carrying out.
This led some staff to isolate from their families, to keep them safe, in order for them to continue to come to work to save the lives of their patients.
This could not have been done without the sheer determination and dedication of the whole team. This included nursing staff, AHP, medical staff, respiratory staff, research staff – the list is endless.
We had regular breaks away from the clinical area to help relax. But most importantly we had each other. We appreciated that everyone would at some point have a ‘bad’ day and we helped each other recognise this to offer extra support to them. Some staff had little dance routines they would perform – this made a difference on the hard days.
All in all every member of the ward 7 team went the extra mile and more.
